Overview
Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

Spreadsheets are the world’s most widely used programming technology and the definitive low-code and no-code platform. The recent success of large language models (LLMs) creates an opportunity to take a qualitative step forward, to extend dramatically the reach of what end users can do with spreadsheets. The Research in Software Engineering (RiSE) group and Excel PROSE team seek Research Interns with a demonstrated desire to extend the state-of-the-art of research on task automation applied to users interacting with spreadsheets. In particular, we see an opportunity to greatly reduce user effort in completing common tasks by combining recent advances in both AI technology (via large language models) and program synthesis techniques.

We seek Research Interns with expertise in one or more of the following research areas: programming languages, HCI and user experience, and AI/NLP/machine learning. There is a genuine possibility that your work could have real-world impact. Past interns have been heavily involved in impactful projects that have transitioned into products.

As a member of the Microsoft Research RiSE group, Research Interns will work in a collaborative environment with mentors and other research interns. You can find more information about the research, people, publications, and projects of the RiSE group here. You can read more about the PROSE team here.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
